The Rockaway Valley Garden Club was approached by the Oscar Kincaid History
House Board of Directors to help establish and maintain their public property.
Working together we have helped beautify the grounds. This year we are establishing
a demonstration herb garden to help in the educational process of showing how
families grew herbs for cooking and health.

Here is a brief history of the house and what the RVGC has done thus far.

The earliest section of the house was built in 1785 by Adam Miller and his wife
Anna De Mouth Miller. It is the second oldest frame building in Boonton Township
and was the site of a forge.

The home changed hands in 1833 from William Scott and was sold to John Decker,
who was Oscar Kincaid Jr’s great-great grandfather. The home was then
enlarged and a most remarkable portrait appears in the main hall entrance,
a work of whimsical folk art.

The farm had a little ice cream stand built by Oscar A. Kincaid, Sr. in the
mid-to late 1920’s, thought to be one of the oldest continually running
country stands in NJ. In 1938 Oscar Kincaid, Sr. entered the dairy business
and enlarged the stand.

By 1944, the Kincaid’s had reverted to general farming, the property
being known as “Valley Farm”. In 1980 the house and property received
the prestigious Century Farm Award given by the NJ Agricultural Society.

Kincaid House 6 Lee Lynn

Oscar A. Kincaid, Jr, a well loved mayor of Boonton Township, died in
November 2000. In 2003 the house and road stand were purchased by
the Historical Society of Boonton Township. It is a popular venue for
community events, programs and exhibitions.
